TREATMENT OF ACQUIRED HEART DISEASE: WHICH DRUG FOR WHICH CONDITION?

There is no such thing as the drug for the condition, because we all react differently to different substances. So, while the news may perhaps dismay some of you, it’s necessary to stress that the age-old process of trial and error comes into the clinical picture here. A doctor has to be sensitive to what is going on within his patient. He may start with one drug, and then abandon it altogether in favour of another. Or he may supplement the original drug with a different compound that helps offset, for example, a particular side-effect. Or he may decide that drugs, except for use in certain emergencies, are less beneficial than lifestyle changes, such as in diet or exercise.

Whatever route is taken, go along with it. What you can do to help, though, is keep a very watchful eye open for side-effects, which should be explained by your doctor when prescribing a heart drug for you. What they are, how severe and how long-lasting - all such information might be relevant, and should be duly noted. Take all the details along to your physician as soon as possible and do something that will stand you both in good stead: talk.
